All these plans I had....Johannesburg, South Africa....Paramaribo, Suriname....Rio, Brazil......Ski season. They all fell through. South Africa didn't want me, Paramaribo offered me the coolest job in the world but wouldn't pay me enough to survive (maybe next year), Rio offered me an okay job, but didn't pay me at all and a ski season.....try to picture me in a ski-outfit. I don't think so !!
So what was left was going to Zuidhorn. "To where?" Yep, Zuidhorn, 10 minutes away from Groningen (will see you when you get back, he Paula !!). "Why?" Because Peter (see the picture of Hollands Glorie of my last message) offered me a room for next to nothing. And let’s face it, work I can find anywhere, a place to sleep is something else.
There I went, with my mattress, my clothes and my lap-top, 3 hours north from home. I stuffed as much of my things as I could in my little room and started to work the next day, because it turned out to be true: I CAN find a job anywhere. Even in Groningen! It’s not my dream job: secretary at the city of Groningen, but it pays and it keeps me off the streets. And it’s actually not a bad department either: Education Culture Sports Wellbeing (?). Gives me a good opportunity to let my new town grow on me (“om in te burgeren”, as we say in Holland).
I must admit it’s not easy to be indoors again and work from 9 to 5. After one week that old familiar thing called a “Monday-morning feeling” came back already. But, living in Zuidhorn/Groningen is a nice adventure that will keep me going for the next 5,5 months I hope. There are new people to meet, new shops and bars to be explored, I can see plays and concerts again and I’m riding my kickbike/scooter/step to explore the countryside. That last thing is actually not just a nice hobby, I’ve got plans with that: a pilgrimage to Santiago the Compostella (“I my God, she’s got another plan!” Yep, you always need a plan, isn’t that right Maria?). And taking into consideration that that’s about 2300 km, I think I better practise for that a little bit. So, that’s what I’m up to lately.
And for next summer, I know where I’ll be……on the beach in South-Brittany. Have a look: http://www.camping-atlantique.fr or http://www.vacansoleil.nl (Frankrijk Westkust Noord/Bretagne Sud/L'Atlantique). Doesn’t look to shabby does it?
